I'm not a beautiful poem,
That fulfills an emotional need.
Allowing you to stay in an empty place,
Daydreaming of being freed.
I'm not a book that breathes depth,
Nor fantasy on a shelf.
Only to be dusted off,
When you're alone with yourself.
I'm not a hidden moment between,
That gets you through the day.
I'm not a secret voice on the phone,
That sees you, even from far away.
You said you saw strength,
I showed what that truly means.
My inner child who leads me forward,
No matter how scared he seems.
Perhaps the strongest thing,
I've never had to do.
Is protect myself from what I'm not,
Even being with you.
I'm not a lot of things,
You may think you see.
I'm just the boy that you saw,
When at first, you just saw me.
Father, executive,
Protector, provider.
I protect myself from what I'm not,
Not chosen by her.
